  • Grading on a curve [Archive] Straight Dope

grading on a curve forces the students to compete with each other in any way the teacher decides. if the book contained all the relevant material then theoretically the student could never come to class and still get an A, but if the teacher says things in class that are not in the book and test for that then the student is forced to come to class. if the teacer designs the test, s/he can make

  • Grading on a curve [Archive] Straight Dope Message

Grading on a curve means that you compute the mean and standard deviation of your grades, and assign the letter grade cutoffs so that a certain proportion of the results falls in each category. For instance, the top 10% might be an A, the next 20% a B, the middle 40% a C, the next 20% a D and the bottom 10% an F.

  • Define: Grading On The Curve? [Archive] Straight

They call that grading on the curve but it obviously isn't really a curve, My psychology professors did grade freshman level classes on a normal curve sometimes. The classes were 150 people or more and a large sample is needed to form a good curve. Grading on a normal curve wouldn't be very good in a class of 5 for example.

  • When teachers curve grades, does it ever lower

Grading on a curve doesn’t lower anyone’s grade, nor does it raise anyone’s grade. It’s the very process of determining what the grades are in the first place. In high school there might have been a chart that said “90% or better is an A, 80% to 90% is a B” or whatever.

Jun 26, 2006· What you described is more like a predefined grade distribution system. Grading on a curve involves using statistics to assign a grade based on your performance compared to the rest of the class. Often the grades are fit onto a gaussian curve so that, for example, 10% of students get an A, 20% get a B, 40% get a C, 20% get a D and 10% get an F.

  • Have you ever been graded on a real curve in a class

After grading the exams some professors will bump the grade to the + or for participation or lack of participation. Others will take finer slices of the curve. This was the same experience I had at law school. Curved grades, anonymous exams, and a lot of effort required to get an F. Regardless, our grades were always curved.

  • Do curveballs really curve? The Straight Dope

Oct 31, 2003· Truth was, the reality of the curve had been demonstrated as early as 1877, when a couple of pitchers — one a lefty, the other a right-hander — threw curveballs around boards that had been set up at intervals along a straight chalk line. (The pitches in question obviously curved more from side to side than up and down.)
